Awarded a fellowship by the Design Trust for Public Space in 2004,
Colin Cathcart worked as an Urban Designer with Nina Rappaport, Urban
Historian, and David Reinfurt, Graphic Designer, to envision the
connections between diverse arts institutions in Long Island City,
a mixed industrial neighborhood just across the East River from Midtown
Manhattan. In their book Long Island City; Connecting the Arts, published
in 2006, the three Design Trust fellows argued against any perception
of a conventional “arts district”, and instead promoted connections
between arts institutions and local development patterns within existing
systems of hybridized urbanism, using web branding, institutional
networking and electronic way-finding to create new kinds of encounters
between artists, exhibitors, and the public.
